What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

The best advice that I have received is to never be afraid to ask for help or reach out to others. In life, we all learn from each other and that's how we grow as individuals. Whether it's a friend, peer, Academic Counselor, or Professor, everyone has something to contribute to someone else's life. Let's support one another on our journeys.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

Graduation with all my fellow peers, it's one of the highlights of my undergraduate career. Being able to see everyone celebrate their culmination of accomplishments over the past 4 years was so heartwarming and joyful. Each student has their own story and background of how they reached the finish line and that is something I will always have a fond memory of.

Juliann Li (she/her)

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I loved becoming part of the Ann Arbor community, learning more about life in Michigan, and in general bonding with other students in my MSW cohort. I am also very grateful for the research experiences I have had at U of M in the social work department.

In what student organizations were you particularly active while at UM?

I served as Vice President for the graduate student organization Mental Health Matters in the School of Social Work. I was also a member of the Asian Pacific Islander Social Work Coalition.

Anything else you would like to share?

I moved from San Diego, California to attend graduate school at Michigan. I'm very grateful for my MSW experience at U of M and I have cherished my time in Ann Arbor! I'm still working locally now and I hope to stay connected with Michigan for years to come, even after we move back to California.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Dismantling white supremacy means dismantling and questioning everything you learn from academia as American educational institutions inherently are classist, racist, ableist, and sexist. Question everything and start listening to disenfranchised and marginalized communities who have long been doing the work.

Finding solidarity within AAPI spaces.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

You don't need to have everything figured out right away. There's so much stress involved with picking a major, finding a job, figuring out a career path, etc. After graduating, working, and returning to grad school, I wish I would have enjoyed the moments in undergrad more. Life has countless unexpected turns, and you can't account for all of them. Just go along for the ride and you'll find yourself where you're supposed to be in the end.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

Through UofM I was able to reconnect with my Thai roots through the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS). By taking Thai classes I learned to read and write Thai, reconnecting myself with distant relatives and culminating in a 6-week trip to Thailand, made possible by the university and CSEAS alumni.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Someone is always willing to support you. Whether it's about your studies, your career, or your personal life, you'll always find those around you who will be reaching out.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

One of my favorite memories was leading an Alternative Spring Break trip to Atlanta, GA, where my group volunteered with the International Rescue Committee. My memories of that week are filled with so many hilarious, joy-filled moments; and I wholly attribute it to all the amazing and incredible people who were part of our team.

Anything else you would like to share?

AAPI Heritage Month is often a time where there is greater attention paid to the calls for racial justice in the Asian American community. But what we must remember is that some of greatest harm to our families (and to so many other families inside and outside the United States) came with the misleading calls for market fundamentalism and attacks on the public sector.

Fighting for economic and social justice in the United States - whether pushing for a living minimum wage, demanding corporations pay their fair share of taxes, or advocating for free and accessible healthcare - may be the most important and directly-beneficial cause for advancing equity and justice for our community.

Sometimes you not only need to put things on the back burner, but you need to turn the burner off altogether. Funding is literally everywhere- don't stop looking! There is no such thing as too much diversity. If you believe that, you've left someone out.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Be involved. Campus can definitely be isolating, but being involved with the community will really change your experience at U-M. 

Don't be afraid to rely on community members, most students on campus are experiencing similar things and can be a great support system. 

Get help when you need it, don't shy away from seeking resources. Academic resources, mental health services, etc, are all available on campus.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

SALAM 2019, we held it in the basement of Trotter. There was about 20 students signed up for the whole event, but the room was packed with so many more people. It was the first two days of the school year, and students from all class standings came and participated. Arab students who were 2nd and 3rd-year students attended and were excited to meet people from the community. It really highlighted the need to have Arab-centered spaces on campus. Intentional programs that target specific students provide an outlet for them to get involved and make campus feel more inclusive. We all connected those two days, and now SALAM has become a staple in the community that students look forward to each year.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was to pursue as many opportunities as possible and don't let fear stop you from going after your goals - you are more capable than you think!

One of my favorite memories was helping bring back the Iraqi Student Association! I got to meet other Iraqis on campus and share Iraqi culture with other students in the community while learning more about it myself.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

I learned how to prioritize my mental health and trust my own instincts and abilities. The best advice I can give is to prioritize learning your dislikes just as much as you prioritize discovering your passions.

Anything else you would like to share?

It's important to learn how to believe in and advocate for yourself. Nearly everyone faces imposter syndrome at some point, if not at multiple points, in their lives. Taking the time to learn about yourself and your unique assets will help you find peace and prepare you for whatever career you're interested in.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Comparison is the thief of joy and the enemy of progress. Take advantage of CAPS while it’s free, just get in the habit of routine mental health check ins. Take time to think about what you need/what you want to accomplish and be assertive about it - learn to say NO to things that will not explicitly help you get there/give you what you need. You can’t help people effectively if you yourself are drained.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

With challenge, comes change. I have had to overcome racial, SES and cultural obstacles on and off campus. With each challenge, it was an opportunity for growth and skill building.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I will always remember when I had my first Black professor. There is something heartwarming seeing someone that looks like you in such a prestigious position.

I worked! MDining, Career Center, MTelefund, UROP, and Sociology Opportunities for Undergraduate Leaders (SOUL).

Jaylen T. Bradley

Industry / Job Title: Politics/Government - Scheduling Intern for The Executive Offices of Governor Whitmer & Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

I have three quick tips that collectively played a vital role in my success at U-M. 

1.) Try to take advantage of all that U-M has to offer. Yes, it's a big institution, but it's also filled with many free resources available like academic tutoring services, grad school test prep, domestic and international internship programs with opportunities for students to even start their other initiatives/projects. For example- Michigan in Washington, Opportunity Hub, University Career Center, Comprehensive Studies Programs, PSIP, OAMI, Ginsberg Center, IGR/Common Ground, are just a few to name. 

2.) Have an equal balance of academics and something you enjoy doing. Life is short. Yes, it is important to stay on track with your academics, but also you have to take care of your well-being. Do what is best for you to feel relaxed, at ease, or fun. Whether that is taking advantage of nature, playing or watching sports, exercising, or even enjoying conversations with friends over a good movie or a game. Time management is the key! 

3.) Do not be afraid to ask for help. U-M has a phenomenal alumni network, and I am proud to be a part of it. We as alumni are here to help you and provide you with tips on life after undergrad and beyond. I urge folks to use LinkedIn to do a quick search to find U-M alumni. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the U-M UCAN system for scheduling conversations/informational interviews with alumni. I used both of these tools a lot as an undergrad, and it continues to pay off tremendously in my career and graduate school pursuits.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

Back when we were not dealing with a global pandemic (in what felt normal)- it would have to be tailgating at any chance given (no matter what the score may have been or in what type of weather). It was great to be around friends and alumni celebrating around a common love for being a Wolverine and of course standing in solidarity, for the TEAM!

Oluseun Oladipo

University of Michigan, Class of 2017 ⏤ BS Chemistry

Industry / Job Title: Healthcare (I'm a grad student currently pursuing a MS in Nursing)

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

A big lesson I learned from my time at the University of Michigan is the value in being proactive and utilizing the resources you have around you. UM, similarly to life outside of school, can be a big place, and there are so many people that can help you, but you have to go out and seek them. UM has so many resources such as the Science Learning Center, Career Center, Gifts of Kindness, International Center, etc, but if you don't reach out and ask for help, they may not know that you need any. Another thing my time at UM taught me was to not take no for an answer. I remember when I was looking for funding for my abroad program, I asked a department if they could fund part of my program, but they had to say no because they didn't have the budget for it. Instead of taking no and being defeated, I chose to ask several other departments for help with funding, and one of them was actually able to provide some funding for me to go abroad. This has taught me to be a fighter and really fight for the goals and dreams that I have.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

One of my best memories of my time at UM was the first time I attended Fusion of Cultures, an event the African Students Association puts on in collaboration with 7 other cultural groups to celebrate diversity. It was so beautiful to see so many different cultures represented, celebrated, and just having fun together, and the food was so good!

Anything else you would like to share?

Always have faith in yourself and YOU belong here! Being accepted into the University of Michigan is a big deal and means something; I wish that I had gave myself more credit for that during my time at Michigan!

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

The advice I would give to the younger me is to make as many connections as possible. Talk to classmates, professors, and professional staff to learn their story and to share yours. Networking and word of mouth connections will serve you well in all aspects of school and beyond!

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

Traveling with my theater class to participate in a cultural exchange program with la Universidad de Costa Rica.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Do your own thing. Show up to the places that interest you, even if it means being alone or looking different, silly, or like a novice.Lean into those quirky interests, and allow yourself to have many!

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My best memory of my time at UM was planning Black Celeb through the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI)! I had the privilege of collaborating on a team of BIPOC women- including staff members and students- to creatively develop a graduation celebration reflective of our heritage, culture, and experiences at Michigan. It was a space where we worked with real intention to foster a celebratory environment that would create long lasting memories for everyone in attendance.

Na'kia Channey

Industry / Job Title: Technology - Operations Program Manager at Google

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

SO MANY! 

1. You lose nothing by asking. Often, the thing that is keeping us from success is our own insecurities, doubt, and anxiety. I believe that people are inherently giving and helpful, and simply asking people for help, even when you don't even know exactly what to ask, can set you up for tremendous opportunity and growth. 
2. I promise you - no one is thinking of you as much as you think they are. Those times that you think you are standing out too much, that you sound foolish, or that everyone secretly thinks negatively of you, are often unfounded. Relax a little (what's the worst that could happen? You won't see most of these people after graduation anyway LOL never let the notions of strangers keep you from your own learning journey). 
3. You owe it to yourself to be the most happy, healthy, and and introspective that you can be. If you ever feel not at 100% or that you are not in control, you absolutely ARE, and it's about taking charge of the things that you can control that makes all the difference. Don't just idle in misery - seek help and solutions, however you define those for yourself. 
4. Surround yourself with people that are better at something that you are. Have friends that are more kind, harder working, more compassionate, passionate, creative, and more. Learn from them, and use the lessons of one another to shape yourself into the person you want to be. 
5. Have fun!!!!!! This is so cheesy and overdone, but I cannot express this enough. Go to more parties, stay up too late more often, DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR HOBBIES, have more intimate conversations about your friends, talk to your professors about the passions outside of academia and what they were like in college, etc. We often think that we are gonna have your last semester with a last big "bang". However, having graduated during the pandemic and reflecting, I learned that college is a wholistic experience, and it is a disservice to yourself to cram 4 years of fun into one semester. 
6. Savor academia. College is one of the few places were you will encounter people intentionally focused on their own niche aspects of learnings and passions. Engage in those dialogues, go to those stimulating talks (especially ones you don't usually expect yourself to go to), talk to strangers, go to orgs that you wouldn't usually. It is incredibly humbling to have access to such abundant information.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My senior year vacation. My whole main friendship squad took our Spring Break trip to Paris. 5 of us, it was a blessing for us to be able to travel together for our last big trip together, especially abroad. Not even considering the incoming pandemic, one of our last days, we took a group photo together in our Michigan major shirts. One of us printed it out and gave it to us all framed as Christmas gifts. I felt so proud to rep my university because it was through this institution, even with all of its flaws, that I was able to meet lifelong friends.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Michigan doesn't admit just anyone into its halls; it is important to remember that. As a student at the University of Michigan, you put in the work to get there, you belong there, and you are not alone. Make friends and don't be ashamed to leverage the resources available to you.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My fondest memory of Michigan would probably be experiencing Festifall for the first time. It was a very enthralling experience to see all the different student groups and organizations Michigan had to offer. To this day, I honestly believe that if you have a specific interest, there is a student organization on campus to satisfy that interest.

Industry / Job Title: Luxury Fashion - North America E-commerce Project Manager at Givenchy

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

In college, I was very concerned with selecting the "perfect" major to the point I changed my major 9 times. I was extremely concerned with becoming successful and what degree would get me to success as quickly as possible. It's funny how life turns out. I ended up majoring in English Literature and working in tech/computer science. Any degree from the University of Michigan will open many doors for you, but maximizing your involvement with campus events, organizations, social clubs, etc, can expand your exposure to various fields and interests.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

Running from East Quad to the Diag freshman year just to scream "Go Blue!" when our basketball team made it to the finals.

In what student organizations were you particularly active while at UM?

Bronze Elegance Multicultural Fashion Show. I was highly involved for my entire 4 yr duration at University of Michigan. This organization not only molded my career and opened the door for my first internship at Diane von Furstenberg, it also changed my entire life for the good.

In my short young career, I was able to work at some of the most prestigious luxury fashion companies within the luxury industry including Diane von Furstenberg, Marchesa, Saint Laurent , and currently Givenchy. Each fashion house was a unqiue experience of it's own where I got to meet celebrities such as Jay - Z, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Joan Smalls, The Weeknd and many more. My biggest advice would be to follow your own path. No one knows what you want and need better than you, so don't let what others say prevent you from fulfilling your dreams. Don't compare yourself and your success to others. 

The second advice would be to enjoy your time in college. Have as much fun as humanly possible.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My best memory was planning a Culture Show when I was President of the African Student Association. It was great to get to do such a big show with many people I am still friends with today. Not only was it transformative but it was also so much fun!

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

A lesson learned (with some advice built in) is that you will rarely feel motivated to do work, so don't wait for motivation to hit. Just start. Discipline will take you farther than motivation. If you need to, find accountability partners to help you stay on top of your work. Another piece of advice: consistently make time for self-care. Regardless of how busy you are, make sure that you are doing what you need to do to protect your mental, physical, and emotional health (eat, sleep, talk to family, hang out with friends, put your phone on Do Not Disturb, read a non-school-related book, watch Netflix or YouTube). School is already hard, don't make it harder on yourself.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My best memory of my time at U of M is hanging out with friends. Whether chilling in dorm lounges, laughing in study rooms, or eating at restaurants, we always found a way to inject happiness into our time together.

Seeing the big "777" Eisenhower sign off of the I-94/State St exit; long walks with my girlfriend (now wife of 24 years) up South U; Mr. Spot's wings and pizza from Cottage Inn and Pizzeria Uno; outdoor pickup basketball games at Angell Elementary School; the first "bite" of cold wind as fall changed to winter; 4 years of life-changing work-study work at the Career Center; and the unique encouragement and tutelage of strong, brilliant black men like Chalmers Knight, Dr. James Chaffers, and Dr. J. Frank Yates.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I have so many good memories. The common theme was getting to know many people from around the world. We had so many differences, but our humanity found a common bond. We discussed a plethora of issues and had many different viewpoints. We treated each other with respect and friendship regardless of our viewpoints.

At UM, I involved myself in intramural sports and enjoyed listening to the many speakers that visited the Ann Arbor campus.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Keep an open mind and let your passions guide you. Taking classes at Michigan about the history, politics, and religions of places all over the world provided me with the background knowledge I now use with immigration clients as a student-attorney. I know my background in world history will help me immensely in my career as an immigration lawyer. I didn't know exactly "what I wanted to be when I grew up" when I declared my history major 9 years ago, but the knowledge I gained from studying history at Michigan has enriched my professional and personal life in myriad ways I could not have anticipated at 18. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

During my senior year, my roommate and I got tickets to see Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg speak at Hill Auditorium. As a young woman who was considering law school at the time, hearing Justice Ginsburg reflect on her pioneering career as an advocate for gender equality was extremely inspirational.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

One of the most memorable moments was when I delivered the keynote address on an Introduction to American Indian (AI) Health at the 2018 Teach-In with my colleague, Kate Trujillo. She and I discussed AI Health from the six pillars of public health that include epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health policy, nutritional sciences, and health behavior and health education.

My best memory at UM was my first year as a veteran peer advisor in 2017. I would spend hours connecting with my students, showing them the ropes, and doing my best to instill confidence in them. Then, a few years later, seeing some of them graduate and move on into the workforce. That experience of working with them made my UM experience, hands down.

One of my fondest memories was watching the Michigan-Nebraska football game from a box seat with my fellow military veterans and alumni! The view was spectacular, and the game was a blast!

I was the Treasurer of the Student Veterans Association. Together we organized bi-monthly meetings, an annual charity benefit dinner, and a slew of tailgates all in an effort to build and support the military veteran community on campus and around Washtenaw County.

Don't count out the opportunity to learn from your peers. While your military background gives you the privilege of sharing your experiences with your peers, you'd be surprised what you can learn from those "younger kids". Approach your time at Michigan not as a step backward to go back to school, but as an opportunity to grow and develop yourself as well as those around you..

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My sophomore year in the pouring rain at the UM-MSU game, my friends and I were completely soaked but not a single person in the student section was fazed as we all sang along to Mr. Brightside. Despite the upset from MSU and being soaked to the bone there's really no other feeling like it; I will always remember that night!

In what student organizations were you particularly active while at UM?

I was an officer for the Student Veterans of America Chapter at UM for 2 years and also part of the Michigan Baja Racing engineering design team throughout undergrad. I was also on the Michigan Climbing Club for 3 years and the Michigan Climbing Team my senior year. I also enjoyed giving back to the local veteran community when I served as a mentor for the Washtenaw County Veterans Treatment Court during my undergrad studies.

My time at University of Michigan taught me that there is always a way to achieve one's goals, to be patient, and to not get to lost in the incessant mind chatter. The universe is abundant and will always help you achieve your goals. Sometimes being surrounded by so many amazing people, we tend to critique ourselves harshly, rather than looking at our journey and praising ourselves for how far we have come. You ARE enough and you are doing a great job. The advice I'd like to share is to take one step at a time, be humble enough to learn from others and to go on long beautiful walks in our splendid campus. I love it and miss it so much!

Everything! From the classrooms, the libraries, late night studying at the Dude, learning new technologies to the walks around campus, the energy on campus, making new friends, learning new cultures, music concerts, evenings around the Diag, Everything! UM is a true home away from home.

The lifelong friends I acquired in the dorms and elsewhere on campus. I still talk to my freshman roommate (Markley hall) almost every day.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

You don't have to do things the way they've always been done. When I tell people that I declared a Women's Studies major in the final semester of my fourth year at Michigan, the reaction is always, "You WHAT?" But I was lucky to have the scholarships and support to stay a fifth year to learn about this way of thinking about the world that had turned my own upside down. Now that I work in advertising, I get asked about this choice more than almost anything. Mostly: how is this even relevant? And I tell them, if I hadn't thrown caution to the wind and took a risk on myself and this less-conventional degree I was so passionate about, I may not bring the crucial empathy, and the ability to understand how cultural forces affect individual behavior, to my work as a brand strategist every day.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

One memory that stands out is my final night with The Michigan Daily, where I worked all 5 years, first as an arts writer/senior arts editor, and then as the paper's first managing editor for social strategy. All of the departing seniors gathered in the building attic, to sign their names to the wall. We were surrounded by the names of so many students before us, dating back decades. It's just that camaraderie and pride that comes from giving so much of yourself to a team and a job that you really believed in and felt challenged by, in the good way.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

Football Saturday! Those are some of my best memories at Michigan. The sense of community is very strong at Michigan, and there is a group for everyone.

The quality of the faculty at Michigan is unparalleled. Throughout my time at Michigan, I encountered numerous professors who challenged me intellectually and left room in the curriculum for students to research topics that they are passionate about. Not to mention the passion in their subject area is infectious in lectures. The lessons I learned at Michigan I still apply today.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

The advice I have for current students at Michigan is to take classes that will teach you how to problem-solve and critically think. Even more now than ever, critical thinking skills are very important in making sense of the world and how to navigate it.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I've had many favorite memories at UM. But if I had to choose a few it would have to be having the chance to listen to Ta-Nehisi Coates speak about his then new book, "Between the World and Me;" traveling to China with my classmates to hear from China activists, business and government leaders; and when my friends hosted an adult tea party in the winter semester (first day it was warm out!).

I was a GSI, so I wasn't as active in student organizations. But I did enjoy participating in programming done by Out In Public, our Ford School's LGBTQ + Allies organization.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

My four years at the University of Michigan changed my life! My advice to current students is to find your way of making the university a small family (for me that was marching band), and then explore everything there is on campus! Take those classes that aren't relevant to your major, but are just interesting. Those will be the ones that stick with you (and you have your whole life to be in your chosen career field!). Also, I know it's tempting but don't spend your whole time focused on a romantic relationship -- you have plenty of time for that, and the friendships you find on campus will be just as important. :)

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I have so many great memories from my time as a trumpet player in the Michigan Marching Band! It's not a single memory, but just the experience of U-M fans on game day will always stay with me. We also had some awesome bowl trips during my years -- going to the Rose Bowl twice was pretty incredible!

Lastly, I would just recommend that students seek out resources on campus too if they are struggling. I had mental health issues and other really tough things happen to me on campus -- and it was people like CAPS counselors and advisors that got me through those times. There are amazing career opportunities (like the LSA Opportunity Hub) that weren't there when I was a student too, and they are so helpful in figuring out life post graduation!

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Be yourself from Day One if possible. Being closeted over-complicates everything. I did not come out at U-M till my senior year and everything was better after I did.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My first year: Going home with my new (heterosexual) friend from the dorm Marni Rachmiel for Thanksgiving since I lived out of state and couldn't afford to fly home, and realizing that being different could be attractive, rather than only a target for tsuris (Yiddish for trouble). Marni's whole family was unconventional, not just Marni, and they role-modeled being endearing while unusual.

In what student organizations were you particularly active while at UM?

"The Michigan Daily" - I wrote four or five Arts articles during my first and second years. I had to do work-study and didn't have a lot of time for extra-curricular activities plus I went abroad for a year to Hebrew University in Jerusalem. My sophomore year, I also got invited to what I now recognize was probably a gay-hosted salon, Chez Kitsch. It was a proto-poetry slam (before the term was used) and I love it. We met weekly.

One of my favorite memories was studying abroad in Amsterdam. I enjoyed learning about politics in the EU and visiting cultural museums and restaurants. That was my first time abroad!

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

If I could offer one word to my younger self, it'd be: breathe. Expectations can be overwhelming, and it is important to learn how to pause, breathe, and allow one's internal voice to lead. Instead of focusing on what people want you to do, or what others are doing, focus on your own path. It is important to do, however, it is most important to become the best version of yourself.

Helping 22 students from under resourced communities get accepted to the University of Michigan is by far my best memory. Serving my community through an outreach program that was created through a student organization is what propelled me to go into the work of higher education/student affairs.

UM taught me that you must have the courage to speak up and the discipline to do the work if you ever expect to see change. So practice speaking up more and build a strong work ethic as early as you possibly can.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My favorite memory was sitting in East Quad when the 2008 election was officially called in favor of President Obama. Campus went absolutely crazy and I'll never forget the overwhelming feelings of joy, hope, and belonging I shared with my friends that night. I got chills just writing this out!

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

University of Michigan has one of the most diverse communities; be involved in your studies and learn as much as you can, but don't forget to learn how to work with other people. Half of the roles I've had as an engineer have required almost just as much engineering knowledge as they did with clear communication and team strategy.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I participated in a program called M-STEM, which introduced us to the school, the classes, and most importantly gave us a network before we even began our college careers. Having that group of friends before classes even started, and the memories of trying to figure out how to be a freshmen together is by far my best memory at UM. They were the group I could count on to always be at the Dude library until 3am working on a project or homework, even if they were just there to help another M-STEM peer finish their work.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Becoming involved in diverse organizations and student groups outside of my coursework and student research involvement enabled me to begin developing early on the skills needed to balance many different responsibilities. As someone pursuing a career in academia and is currently juggling the work related to my research, teaching, and university service, starting this early on and building upon it during my PhD and now into my postdoctoral fellowship has definitely been an advantage. It has also helped me develop into a more well-rounded candidate for academic positions.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

It would be hard to pick just one. Becoming involved in coral reef research, which would jumpstart me on the career path to where I am now, and becoming very involved in the Latino student community where I met so many amazing people have to be my two best memories of my time at U of M.

In what student organizations were you particularly active while at UM?

Latino Student Organization (LSO), Multicultural Greek Council, Lambda Theta Alpha (LTA), Proyecto Avance: Latino Mentoring Association (PALMA)

Anything else you would like to share?

After moving on from my undergraduate degree at U of M, during which I did international field research on coral reefs in Okinawa, I got further opportunities through my diverse involvement in research and organizations. During my PhD, I had the opportunity to work on four NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) missions where I trained astronauts from NASA, ESA, and JAXA in coral reef sampling and research. This was an amazing opportunity that led me to work with and train one-on-one renowned astronauts such as Pedro Duque, the current science minister of Spain, and Megan McArthur, who was involved in the repair of and was the last person to have hands on the Hubble Space Telescope. I am currently conducting research in Australia on the genomics of the algal endosymbiont of corals as well as thermophilia algal species from Yellowstone National Park.

Your mind is powerful, but your body needs time to rest and recover. Although things may be difficult and overwhelming, and they will if you're challenging yourself and growing, do your best, but don't let that be at the expense of your spiritual, mental, and physical health.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Your undergrad years go by so fast! Make the most of your time on campus- try new things, meet people who are different than you, go to events that pique your interests, believe in yourself, and cultivate your passions.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I loved planning and hosting events with my sorority sisters. Proyecto Juarez was an event very close to my heart. Our goal was to raise awareness and funds for the victims of femicide in Ciudad Juarez.

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

Put yourself out there! Try out for that team, go on that service trip, volunteer, meet new friends, go on dates, go to different sporting events. Also take breaks from studying and don't be too hard on yourself. It really goes by too quickly so take advantage of all the fun things U of M has to offer while you can.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

Volunteering in Guatemala with Humanity First for spring break! Also seeing President Obama speak at the Field House (and camping out all night to get tickets).

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

One of the biggest things I learned during my time in Michigan was time management skills. This not only helped me stay on top of my school work, but it helped me be more at ease when I did things outside of school. Your time at Michigan is limited, so do what you have to do academically but don't forget to also enjoy your time there!

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

I had the opportunity to travel abroad 3 times during my undergrad and those were some of the best memories I made. I would encourage everyone to try and travel at least once. There are a lot of scholarships and ways you can fund these trips. To be able to be immersed in your learning while also learning about new cultures is a wonderful experience!

In what student organizations were you particularly active while at UM?

I was heavily involved in ALMA (Assisting Latinx to Maximize Achievement), Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, and La Casa. One of my biggest goals while on campus was to have a strong sense of community and through these different organizations, I was able to meet some of the best people that cared about the same issues I did and have a home away from home.

Anything else you would like to share?

There are a lot of resources and opportunities available to you from the University! Don't be afraid to reach out to others for help. Make sure you also take advantage of all the opportunities offered!

What are lessons you learned or advice you would like to share from your time at the University of Michigan?

1. The biggest lesson I learned during my time at UM is the importance of maintaining relationships with professors and mentors. Your support system genuinely wants to see you succeed and oftentimes, they've already dealt with some of the hurdles you're facing and can provide some much-needed insight (plus, these are the people who will potentially write your letters of recommendation for graduate school or future career opportunities).

2. Don't be afraid to ask for help and don't wait until it's too late. I went in with a different plan/major in mind, but was fortunate enough to have an advisor guide me in a different direction once we realized my initial plan was not working out. Flexibility is also key!

3. Finally, the importance of a work-life balance and enjoying your short time at UM! Obviously, graduating was the ultimate goal, but I'm glad I explored my interests and made lifelong friendships. I don't remember most of my assignments, but I can still recall some of my best memories outside of class.

What's your best memory of your time at UM?

My best memories are those I shared with my Lambda Theta Alpha sisters. From late night study sessions in Angell Hall to stroll practices and later serving as chapter president my senior year, I really cherish the time I spent them -- it truly enriched my college experience.
