University of Michigan/UCC Resources
- Handshake: A pathway to career connections. Through this tool you can: Explore job and internship openings, engage in recruiting activities with employers, and develop and track your goals and next steps. You can also identify University Career Center events, workshops, and fairs and schedule an appointment with a UCC coach to discuss your ideas, and develop plans, and strategies related to graduate/professional schools, and employment.

University of Michigan/UCC Resources
- Sweetland Writing Center: This U of M department can help you improve your writing for academically related work as well as personal statements, or additional writing submissions (ie. writing samples) that may be requested as part of your application materials.
- Newnan Advising: At the LSA advising office you can make an appointment to meet with an advisor about your questions related to academic requirements to prepare you for applying to graduate school, medical school, law school etc.
- UCAN: UCAN (University Career Alumni Network) is a U of M resource that allows students to connect with university alumni across any broad spectrum of fields, or majors, to gain insight or advice on resumes, interviewing tips, personal statements, and so much more. When exploring Alumni, in the search bar type in “First Gen” and you will see all the alumni that have self-identified as first-generation. These Alumni are willingly donating their time on this platform to help students in any way they can with guiding their future steps beyond college.

University of Michigan/UCC Resources
- Mentorship @ UM: A list of mentorship opportunities at the University of Michigan that are specifically designed for First-Gen students!
- The First Generation Student Gateway: Serves as a starting point to get connected to resources for first-generation students. Housed in the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), the Gateway is linked to several partner offices and is a home for support for first-generation students.
Additional External Resources
- Online Community for First-Gen: This is an online community for First-Gen students. This resource offers information for questions individuals may have before arriving on campus, or at any point during college years. Stories of current First-Gen students are provide, and stories of new First-Gen students may be added (if interested)!
- Center for First-Generation Student Success: This resource is created through a NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) initiative . It provides First-Gen students with a wealth of resources for professional development and mentorship.
- Rise First: This resource offers virtual webinars for first-generation students and professionals to learn and share as a community.

- Career Advice for First-Generation Grad Students: This article offers six key pieces of advice from a First-Generation graduate student on transitioning from academe to the world of work.
- I am First: Hear testimonials from first-gen students and graduates from across the country.
- Fact sheet on first-gen students: This fact sheet offers information about First-Gen students from their pre-college years through their academic experiences.
- First-Generation Students Unite: An article that shares the stories of First-Gen college students across the country. It encourages First-Gen students to embrace being First-Gent as a unique part of their identity.
- Michelle Obama’s Video for First-Gen students: Former First Lady Michelle Obama, a first-generation college graduate, message to First-Gen college students across the country.
- Scholarships for First-Gen: This is resource provides college funding options and/or additional scholarship resources.
